Utah Paxil Lawyer

|

The popular SSRI antidepressant Paxil (paroxetine) has been on the U.S. market since the early 1990s, but the FDA only started warning about the risk of birth defects in 2005. Since then, numerous studies have linked Paxil to birth defects, heart defects, Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN), and more. Our Utah Paxil lawyers are concerned that many babies may have been harmed before warnings were placed on this medication.

Paxil and Pregnancy

Paxil (paroxetine) is categorized as a “Pregnancy Class D” medication, which is a grade lower than all other antidepressant medications in the same class. Although Paxil has been used in the U.S. since the early 1990s, it was only downgraded to a “D” drug in 2005, after multiple studies linked it to a higher risk of heart defects.

In fact, this study, conducted by American researchers who analyzed a registry of birth defects, found a 4% risk of all birth defects among babies exposed to Paxil during development, and a 2% risk of heart defects. The researchers found that Paxil was linked to a doubled risk of birth defects compared to other antidepressants in the same class.

FDA Warnings for Paxil Birth Defects

After reviewing numerous studies linking Paxil and other SSRIs to birth defects, the FDA published two safety communications:

  • In December 2005, the FDA downgraded Paxil to a “Pregnancy Category D” drug and issued a Safety Communication to warn about the risk of heart defects.
  • In 2006, a study found that pregnant women who used an SSRI (including Paxil) were six times more likely to have a baby suffer Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN) at birth. The FDA published a Public Health Advisory to warn about this risk.
